Pig Pattern

Pigs are awesome animals - curious, social, intelligent. And here's my crocheted version. My farm animal collection is slowly growing, but I am still missing quite a few - a horse, a goat and a cow are already on my list, maybe even some more exotic animals like alpacas or ostriches.

As with quite a few of my other animals, I used joints to attach the arms and legs, which makes them movable. If you haven't used doll joints before, here's a little blog post I wrote about different ways to attach jointed limbs. It's not difficult at all but adds a fun little touch.

I've marked the pattern as intermediate because it does include a couple of techniques that you might not be familiar with if you are new to crochet, but they are not actually that complicated and you can always come back and take a look at the TUTORIALS section for videos to help you learn.

Here's what you'll need:

  • Yarn. I used Alize Cotton Gold, a sport weight cotton-acrylic blend, 329 m / 100 g (360 yd / 3.53 oz) / 14 wpi / 2: fine. You will need about 55 g (180 m) of light pink and 20 g (66 m) of white yarn.
  • 2,25 - 3,00 mm crochet hook (US size 1/B - 3/D) or according to the yarn.
  • Polyester fiberfill, wool, wadding for stuffing.
  • 9 mm (1/3") safety eyes or buttons, beads, felt etc.
  • Two 20 mm (4/5") and two 15 mm (3/5") plastic doll joints or safety eyes or buttons and thread.
  • Black or dark brown embroidery floss.
  • Yarn needle, scissors, stitch marker.

My piglet turned out about 26 cm (10 1/4") tall, including ears. But of course you can size it up or down by picking a finer or thicker yarn.

Your little pig is adorable. I love it with its movable arms and legs.
